It seemed as though March 24th was a day to try new things. After eating at Morgan's, we decided to visit a place that we'd heard about on the Phantom Gourmet - The Gingerbread Construction Company. Yes, it was quite a drive for us, but where else can you get muffins that look like these? Not around here, that's for sure. Mom and I decided to visit their flagship store in Wakefield. We arrived around 2 p.m.

The drive wasn't bad, and thankfully the building is right off the highway. Once inside, we were surrounded by beautiful display cases filled with homemade muffins, cookies, and adorable gingerbread boys and girls. Since Easter was the next holiday, everything was decorated in lovely pastel colors, and each case was pleasingly full considering it was already after 2 p.m.

Of course, Mom and I had already selected what we were going to get thanks to The GCC's great Web site. We chose ten muffins, and it cost me ... are you ready ... $18.30. Yes, it was expensive, but again, when are we here? We oohed and ahhed over the adorable packaging and logo (two gingerbread pals high-fiving each other) and took our delicious muffins home. We couldn't wait to dig in.

When we got home (the muffins traveled beautifully), we decided to try one. One turned into two, and then we froze the remaining muffins to have them later on in the week. We chose, in no particular order, the orange pineapple, banana cream, Boston cream, carrot, chocolate dream, chocolate raspberry, gingerbread, lemon poppy, pumpkin raisin, and strawberry shortcake.

I took lots of photos because I figured that this was the type of review that did not need a lot of words. The beautiful muffins speak for themselves. The GCC uses real fruit and not that gross jelly that is found in so many muffins. The real fruit really added a tangy kick to the muffins, which were all very soft and flavorful. Even after they had been frozen, the taste was excellent.

Surprisingly, none of the muffins were overly sweet. They were just perfect. A little on the large side, you may want to split these muffins with a friend. That's what Mom and I usually do. We cut everything in half so that we can both have a taste. It usually works out wonderfully.

It's hard to even call these "muffins" because they were so much like a cupcake rather than a breakfast pastry. However, they are in fact muffins and are some of the tastiest we've ever had. If you're in the area, or if you're a nutjob like we are and feel like driving over an hour to get a box of muffins, stop by The Gingerbread Construction Company. You will really be amazed.
