Ugly American

240 New Boston Road
Fall River, MA 02720
(508) 672-4427

At around 2:30 p.m., Mom and I started getting hungry. We didn't know what we wanted to eat for lunch, so I decided to grab the phone book and see what was available. Before I could open it, Mom suggested this restaurant - Ugly American- which came highly recommended by my aunt. After looking up their ad in the Yellow Pages, I found their Web address and headed for the computer to look at their menu.

The menu at Ugly American is small, but interesting. They only use Angus beef to make their handmade burgers, and their hot dogs come with a natural casing. Since burgers were something that Mom had in mind for lunch anyway, she decided to go with that. At 2:50 p.m., I placed the call to Ugly American. A polite gentleman who seemed to be in a rush took my order. I ordered a burger for Mom ($4.37), two ears of grilled sweet corn ($2.35 each), a small box of half fries/half onion straws ($1.99), a jalapeno dog ($1.69), and a bacon cheddar dog ($1.99). The gentleman did not give me a price over the phone, but he did tell me that my order would be ready in about 15 minutes. Impatiently, I started putting on my shoes and tracking down my camera so I could take my undercover pictures of the restaurant.

The picture taking didn't really go so well. Since Ugly American is on a busy street, I was only able to get a few drive-by snapshots of the outside. This was my best shot:

Once inside, there were two customers seated on opposite sides of the dining room. I tried taking pictures, but I didn't want them to spot me with the camera, so I was only able to get a shot of the counter area. There are better pictures available on their Web site.

The dining room is very cute and modern. There is a large chalkboard area around the counter that lists various specials and details about the restaurant. There is also a small section with several books on shelves, as well as a few Ugly American T-shirts. When I looked up at the large ceiling fan in the center of the room, I spotted two lighted menus that were being used as light fixtures! What a terrific idea! There were also two large coolers with drinks inside, as well as a small alcove area where diners could go if they wanted some privacy. There are no booths here - only tables - and hanging on one of the walls was a large poster of the movie The Ugly American, starring the late Marlon Brando. Some are walls painted white, while the other walls had something on them which was indistinguishable to me in my short time there. Was it paint? Fabric? Paneling? Who knows, but it was certainly attractive. I was very surprised at how trendy this small restaurant was.

I was greeted by a young girl at the counter that asked for my name to track down my pickup order. Although I had to wait about two minutes for the ears of corn to be ready, I didn't mind. She rang up my order, and the total came to:

Burger - $4.37
2 grilled sweet corn - 4.70
Small half/half - 1.99
Jalapeno dog - 1.69
Bacon cheddar dog - 1.99
Subtotal - $14.74
Tax - .74
TOTAL = $15.48

I paid the cashier, grabbed a bright orange take-out menu for Mom, and headed for the door. As I drove home, the smell of the food started to fill up the car. Everything smelled so wonderful. I couldn't wait to get home and chow down.

Along with their daily list of specials that are written on the chalkboard or advertised on their sidewalk signs, Ugly American has some delicious choices at very low prices. Burgers include the mini burger ($1.47), chicken breast ($4.19), veggie ($3.97) and the Portobello ($3.97). You can add an extra regular topping (red onion, cole slaw, mixed greens, pepperoncini, bread & butter pickles, iceberg lettuce, and tomato) for $.50, and all burgers come with one cheese choice, two regular toppings, and a sauce (buttermilk ranch, honey mustard, vinaigrette, spicy wing sauce, roasted garlic aioli, remoulade, BBQ, Caesar, and blue cheese dressing). Hot dogs include the plain ($1.35), chili ($2.19), cheese (add $.25), and you can also add an extra regular topping for $.25. Premium toppings are $1 extra for burgers, and $.50 extra for hot dogs. They include avocado, fried egg, hardboiled egg, bacon, grilled asparagus, caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms, chili, fried onion straws, grilled red onion, roasted jalapenos, roasted peppers, and guacamole. For an appetizer, you can order fries, sweet potato fries, onion straws, and zucchini fries. You can order a box of fries/straws (small $1.99, large $2.99) or you can order a 1/2 and 1/2 (small $1.99, large $2.99), where you can choose whatever you want. You can also add chili for $1, or cheese for $.75. Ugly favorites include dishes like The Cheese ($5.29), which is a 7 oz. burger smothered in "a motherload of cheese" with a crispy cheese skirt; the chicken asparagus ($5.29), which is a chicken breast with mozzarella and grilled asparagus; and the mini burger trio ($4.39), which is a plate of three mini burgers with one cheese on each mini - American, Swiss, and Cheddar. Ugly American also features several salads, sandwiches, and side dishes.

When I got home, Mom and I opened the plastic bag containing our lunches. The two hot dogs were in one container, while the burger was in another. The containers were actually custom Ugly American boxes. Nice touch! The ears of corn arrived in a covered aluminum cake tin, while the fries and straws came in a small cardboard box.

Both Mom and I ate the ears of corn first. Flavored with butter, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese, these grilled ears were very tasty. Both ears were cooked well, and we both thought the added cheese was a nice touch.

Throughout the meal, both Mom and I snacked on our order of half hand-cut fries, half onion straws. The fries and the onion straws came mixed together which was unusual, but tasty. They were a bit on the wet side, but this may not have anything to do with grease. It may have been because the fries/straws were hot when they went into the bag, and then driven back to my house. They may have just been a little sweaty. Plus, they were sitting on top of the hot ears of corn.

Mom's burger was hand-formed, quite thick, and perfectly done. She ordered it medium well and it was cooked exactly right, which is hard to do with a burger that thick. The flavor was great. Mom said it was really tasty. It had a nice charred crunch on the outside, and the inside was moist and delicious. Even the bun was soft and fresh.

My hot dogs were very good. They were in the natural casing, which gave them a nice snap, but were not hard to chew (like some casings are). I ate the bacon cheddar dog first, which had a great bacon flavor. The cheese was light and not goopy like some toppings can be. The jalapeno dog had a delicious - and spicy - caramelized jalapeno relish, which I had never had before. It was cool going in, and but once you started to chew, you could really feel the heat. Both buns, like Mom's, were soft and fresh.

There are several other dishes that we would like to try from Ugly American. With an interactive Web site, trendy interior, and delicious food, we think that this restaurant is a nice addition to Fall River's dining spots. Both Mom and I hope it stays around for a long time.

Ugly American is open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. They are closed on Sunday.

Black Goose Cafe

2160 Main Road
Tiverton, RI 02878
(401) 816-0882

With three great recommendations for the Black Goose Cafe from my friends Gregg, Lindsey, and Liz, Mom and I were very excited to be heading there for lunch on this chilly afternoon. When we first pulled into the small parking lot, we didn't see any other cars. Thinking that the Black Goose might be closed, I gave them a call on my cell. After all, why get out of the car when you can just pick up a phone? Someone did answer the phone, so Mom and I quickly found ourselves headed up the stairs that lead to the patio area. After some mix up with the front door (perhaps they should put an arrow that points to the actual entrance), Mom and I stepped inside at 3:30 p.m.

Not having been there before, we weren't sure how the ordering process works. Luckily, a polite blonde cashier noticed our confusion and told us how to order. She said that we can look over their menu and place our order at the counter. Then, if we were to dine in, she would bring our meals over to the table we had chosen. Sounded good to me! I took two laminated, double-sided menus from the cashier and had a seat with Mom at a table by the window. There were a lot of items on the menu that looked good, but I had my sights set on The Parisian - a panini sandwich recommended by Liz. There was also a large chalkboard by the cash register that listed more of their delicious options. I spotted a drink section and wanted to see if they had the pumpkin chai that Liz had also suggested. Although I didn't see it, I did see a gingerbread chai that sounded good. With Mom having picked her meal, I took the two menus up to the counter. We had both chosen two of the Black Goose customer favorites (noted by the black goose icon on the menu). I went with The Parisian ($6.75), which consists of grilled chicken breast, herb cheese spread, fresh baby spinach, provolone, and caramelized onions. Mom chose the Et Tu Brute ($6.95), which is grilled chicken breast, applewood bacon, fresh romaine lettuce, and shaved Parmesan with a stab of Caesar dressing on country white. I also ordered both of us two large gingerbread chai drinks ($3.95 each). The bill came to:

Parisian - $6.75
Et Tu Brute - 6.95
2 Gingerbread chai - 7.90
Subtotal - $21.60
RI Tax - 1.51
RI Tax 1 - .22
TOTAL = $23.33

After paying, I asked to take a menu back to the table so we could further examine it. The cashier informed me that they had takeout menus available. I grabbed one and took my seat by the window, which overlooks Tiverton's Nanaquaket Pond. After sitting down, I noticed that they did in fact have the pumpkin chai. Oh well - maybe next time!

The Black Goose is very cute and trendy, yet welcoming and pleasant. The black chairs and wood tables really stand out against the beige and green walls. There are no booths here, and only about eight tables, so I'm assuming that they do a substantial takeout business. When walking in, customers are greeted with a large display case that features some of their baked goods, and two large drink cases that house various soft drinks and flavored waters. There is also a display area that features several varieties of New England's favorite potato chip - Cape Cod (I personally think they are way too greasy). Soft music and lighted lanterns bring a sense of tranquility to the dining area, and a station with extra napkins and straws is decorated with a large corkboard displaying local advertisements and activities. There is also one unisex restroom at the back of the restaurant, and several large windows that overlook the pond.

view from the window

Along with the large chalkboard that features daily specials and winter specialities like the apple pie and eggnog lattes, the Black Goose has both a breakfast and a lunch menu. Their breakfast panini list includes the egg, black forest ham, and provolone sandwich ($4.95), while their breakfast stratas are their house speciality. Stratas include the cinnamon raisin French toast souffle ($4.95), and the hash brown and applewood bacon souffle ($4.95). Quiche varieties include the three cheese ($4.95), and the spinach, tomato, and Swiss ($4.95). Baked goods are also available like the raisin scones ($1.95) and the bagels and cream cheese ($1.99), and the ginger scones ($1.95) are a customer favorite. You can also order a bowl of steel cut Irish oatmeal ($3.95), with toppings ($.25 each) including pecans, almonds, dried cranberries, raisins, and banana chips. For healthier diners, a cup of fresh fruit ($4.95) or fresh fruit, granola, and yogurt ($4.95) is available. The beverage brands include Seattle's Best Coffee and Tazo Teas, and other options include fruit juices, smoothies, frozen coffees, and an espresso bar. For lunch, the Black Goose features a list of Greek cuisine, and a note at the top of the menu reads that "Yia Yia's recipes are served with rice with red sauce and a side Greek salad." Specialities include the moussaka ($8.95), the pastitsio ($8.95), and the spanakopita ($7.95), which is spinach and feta cheese blended between layers of crispy phyllo dough. Lunch salads include the Greek ($5.99) and Caesar ($5.99), and you can add grilled chicken, tuna salad, or chicken salad to any of them for just $1.99. Available soups and quiches vary daily, while a list of deli sandwiches include the Black Goose chicken salad ($5.75), the roast beef ($5.95), and the grilled chicken breast ($5.75). You have your choice of breads and assorted toppings. Paninis include The Godfather ($6.75), which is prosciutto, Genoa salami, pepperoni, provolone, roasted red peppers, basil, and baby spinach, while the signature sandwiches include The Bat Out of Hell ($6.95), which is grilled meatloaf, cheddar cheese, and spicy caramelized onion sauce on country white bread. All sandwiches and paninis are served with a side special and a deli pickle.

Our chai had arrived first, and they were incredible. The gingerbread flavor was very potent and the drink itself was very creamy and delicious. The sandwiches arrived soon after in small baskets, accompanied by cups of potato salad, two pickles, and silverware. We both commented on how large the sandwiches were, and that we certainly got a lot for our money. Mom's sandwich was served on very large slices of country white bread, which was very soft with a crisp crust. The chicken was freshly grilled - not deli meat. It was nicely sliced into the sandwich. The bacon was perfectly done, and was thick and meaty. The romaine was nice and crisp, and the Caesar dressing was a cool touch. It was a great combination, and Mom loved it. It was almost like having a chicken Caesar salad in the form of a sandwich. She would definitely get it again. The only downside was that it seems to have been buttered on the outside, and since her sandwich was not going to be grilled, she didn't know why it was buttered. It made the sandwich a little bit greasy and moist to hold.

My sandwich was amazing as well. I fell in love with the lean, grilled chicken breast, and the cheese, spinach, and onions were all very fresh and tasty. Liz was right - this sandwich is fantastic! The only downside was the butter. Because my sandwich is a panini, it gets placed on the grill. This is fine, but I believe mine may have been a little over-buttered. It was difficult to hold, and was very greasy. It almost took away from the taste of the sandwich. Perhaps if they were to go a little lighter on the butter next time, I would have been able to enjoy it even more. Also, the potato salad they served with it was delicious. It was very fresh and creamy, and the red potatoes were served with the skin on. It was great!

Both Mom and I were approached by one of the servers during the meal and were asked if we would like a box for the other half of our sandwich. Since we hadn't finished eating yet, Mom declined. Although neither of us were able to finish that second half, we definitely enjoyed ourselves and were very glad we had chosen both of the sandwiches. Now, here' s a question. Both Mom and I were confused as to whether or not we should leave a tip. We got some money out and placed it aside, but since we ordered at the counter, we weren't sure who would be getting the money. I wanted to wait and see if some of the other customers had left a tip. Mom decided to use this time to go to the restroom. She said the bathroom was average, but she was a bit horrified to see that the bathroom window did not have a curtain. Thankfully, the window is very high up on the wall so that no peeping Toms are able to take a look inside. Also, the bathroom seemed to be missing some supplies. When Mom came out, another table was getting ready to leave. I looked at what they'd left behind for the waitress, but did not see a tip. Confused, Mom and I left nothing (sorry!) and said goodnight to the staff. When we got to the car, we were still wondering if we should have left a tip. Does anyone know the answer to this? What is the proper etiquette?

We were so impressed with the Black Goose, that we tried to stop by again - this time for breakfast. Unfortunately, there was a snowstorm and our plans had to change. Luckily, we don't think the Black Goose is going anywhere anytime soon, and a big thank you goes out to Gregg, Lindsey, and Liz for suggesting such a great place.

The Black Goose Cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Prince's Hill Deli + Catering

328 County Road
Barrington, RI 02806
<

I fell in love with Prince's Hill Deli while working a temporary job at Barrington High School in March-April of 2005. What I noticed about this place was, aside from their fabulous food, it had a certain kind of "Cheers" feeling when you walked in - everybody knew your name. They even started to know mine after just a few visits. The friendly gentleman behind the counter even made a point to get everyone in the dining room to say goodbye to me as I left with my sandwich. Although dying with embarrassment, I thought it was adorable how everyone got along so well. Oh, and they have some of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever eaten.
<
After having been away for so long, I was thrilled to find myself in the Barrington area at around 3 p.m. in search of a great lunch. I figured that if I stopped at Prince's Hill, I could finally present Mom with one of these illustrious sandwiches that I spoke so highly of back in '05. When I pulled into the lot, I saw that every parking spot in front of the deli, which is located in a plaza, was taken. However, I soon found a spot in another lot that wasn't too far from Prince's entrance.

<
Wow, this place hadn't changed a bit! With a large dining room to the right of the restaurant, and a large deli counter to the left, the interior brought back happy memories of delicious sandwiches and employment at Barrington High. Since it was after the lunch rush, the place only had a few scattered customers around the dining area and just two in the small wicker chairs which serve as a "waiting area" to people with deli orders. The black and white checkered floor resembles that of a 1950's style diner, but the furniture and draperies resemble a quaint French bistro. I've never seen this place in disarray, and this visit was as spotless as the last.
<
As I approached the counter, I was greeted by a friendly girl who promptly took my lunch order. For Mom, I ordered a roast turkey sandwich on marble rye (they were out of wheat) with lettuce, a little bit of mayo, and Provolone cheese ($6.25). For myself, I chose a favorite of mine from the past - the Belvedere ($6.75). This is basically a Greek salad in a wrap, consisting of green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, Feta, Bermuda onion, cucumbers, hot peppers, black olives, and carrots all topped with Greek dressing. Splendid! Although $6.75 is a lot to pay for a wrap, and $6.25 is certainly a lot to pay for a turkey sandwich, I knew we were in for a tasty meal.

<

Prince's Hill Deli has several speciality sandwiches, including their signature - the Prince's Hill ($7.25). This sandwich consists of roasted turkey breast, their own baked ham, melted Swiss cheese, slices of bacon, crunchy pickle slices, and honey mustard dressing all served on a bulky roll. Other yummy choices include the 8 Valentine (roast beef), Tee Jay (oven-roasted turkey breast), Katama (their take on Thanksgiving), Hot Corned Beef, Grilled Chicken, and the Popponessett, which is grilled chicken in buffalo sauce with blue cheese dressing, cucumbers, lettuce, and carrots. Prices on these specialities range from $6.25-7.25. You can also make your own sandwich from their sandwich board ($6.25 -extra toppings 30 cents) where you can pick your favorite meat, cheese, spread, bread, and two toppings from their list. All sandwiches (including specialty) come with a sliced half sour pickle and potato chips, which I turned down for both sandwiches when asked by the girl at the counter. They have a children's menu, salads, soups, a soup and sandwich combo, and breakfast is served daily from 8-11 a.m., which includes bagels, coffee cakes, homemade muffins, and fresh brewed coffee. Prince's Hill also has a large variety of ready-made pasta, potato, and chicken salads including dill potato, Greek cucumber, Chinese chicken, Mediterranean, apple and nut chicken, and their own pasta salad. A catering menu is also available with both breakfast and luncheon choices for your wedding, dinner buffet, or Bar Mitzvah! Although prices are high, you are paying for quality food.

<

While reading a magazine in the wicker waiting area, my name was called. My order was ready, and the total came to $14.04. I grabbed a menu on the way out and headed for home. When I arrived, Mom and I quickly unwrapped our food.
<
Mom said that they were very generous with the turkey. It was freshly cut and tasted delicious. You could also tell that the Provolone was fresh, as well as the lettuce. She was also bowled over by the delicious bread, which was extraordinarily fresh with a nice soft texture and a great chewy crust. Mom even asked me if they have loaves of this bread to take home, but unfortunately they do not. All in all, she thought this was a great sandwich.
My wrap was just as good as I remembered. Fresh veggies, tangy Feta, and the melt-in-your-mouth wrap all came together in a delicious blend. It's a shame that I waited over two years to reacquaint myself with this gem.
<
Prince's Hill Deli is one of a kind, and it will always be on my list as having some of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted. Unfortunately, you would have to take out a loan to eat here on a daily basis. However, it certainly does make for a great lunch on a special occasion ... like pay day!

Roger's Coney Island Hot Dogs

1518 North Main St.
Fall River, MA 02720
(508) 678-9889
Although I haven't been to Roger's since their renovation, their delicious hot dogs have stayed fresh in my memory. On a trip here with my aunt and cousins, we all dined on their famous dog with fries. The hot dog was tender and meaty, the bun was deliciously toasted and the portions were huge and cheap. Roger's now has a huge dining room with lots of other menu options. I believe they even serve breakfast now! This is definitely something I'd love to try very, very soon.

Panera Bread

Panera Bread has the best bagels and cream cheese around. They bake them fresh on the premises, along with a variety of different breads and pastries. Their sandwiches are outstanding, since they make the bread fresh right there. All their meats and veggies are nice and fresh. They also carry a variety of daily soups, and make huge, delicious salads. The price is a little expensive, but it's really worth it for the quality of the foods. I've enjoy everything I've ever gotten from here, and usually leave with a loaf of bread. Laura's favorite - the asiago bagel with veggie cream cheese. She almost always gets this with one of the iced chai drinks. My favorite is the cinnamon crunch bagel with honey walnut cream cheese. Their iced coffee drinks are fantastic, but expensive! They usually cost more than what you're eating. It's only an occasional treat. The interior is very pretty. Lots of wood and separated eating areas. It has a fireplace and couches for you to sit on and relax with your food. Very much like a trendy TV coffee shop. The service itself is very quick. All in all, this is a great place for a nice breakfast or lunch.

Nick's Hot Dogs

534 S Main St.
Fall River, MA 02721
(508) 677-3890
Nick's Hot Dogs has been in Fall River for what seems like an eternity. It's served literally generations of hungry Fall Riverites. It's a very small restaurant right on South Main Street that still has the old-fashioned school desks all in a row which are kind of funky. They serve hot dogs, hot dogs, and hot dogs! I think they have a few other items like hamburgers, potato chips, soda ... but not much more than that. The hot dogs here are done on a rolling grill and they steam the buns. Actually, the hot dogs are quite tasty, and everyone says they're tasty due to the local legend which is ... that the guy lines them up on his arm in a long row well past the elbow, which gives them their special "flare." I don't know about that, but for whatever reason they're not bad. This is not really much more than it appears to be - a little hot dog place where you can grab a tasty, quick, inexpensive lunch or dinner.

Marzilli's Bakery

944 Bedford St.
Fall River, MA 02723
(508) 675-5551

Marzilli's has the best grinders I've ever tasted. Besides the abundance of fresh meats and cheeses they put in your sandwich, it has to be because of the bread. This Italian bread, made on the premises, is absolutely delicious. It has a very soft inside and a nice crust on the outside. Whether eaten alone or stuffed with meats, this bread is outstanding. They have all kinds of sandwiches, the most popular being the Italian, but they also have ham & cheese, meatball, Italian sausage, eggplant parmigiana, etc., etc. They have a small area for dining, but most people get take-out, and boy do the sandwiches fly out of here. On certain days, this place is very busy. However, one bite would tell you that it's worth the wait. The prices are very reasonable for the size sandwich you get, and for the quality of the meats. I think I'll pick up the phone and order right now.

Marcucci's Bakery

1076 Bedford St.
Fall River, MA 02723
(508) 678-5426
Marcucci's Bakery has a friendly rivalry going with my favorite grinder shop - Marzilli's. Although Marzilli's is my favorite, Marcucci's is also very good. They have all manner of grinders here and very nice Italian bread. They also carry pizza slices, chourico rolls, stuffed quahogs, and a few other items, but it's the grinders they're famous for. Besides their great bread, the quality of their meats and cheeses is outstanding. We've ordered from here before, and I know we'll order from here again.

JJ's Coney Island Hot Dogs

567 S Main St.
Fall River, MA 02721
(508) 679-7944
Wanna stay up all night? Eat some JJ's Hot Dogs. I don't know what it is, but every time anyone I know eats JJ's, they wind up sick all night. They have a habit of pre-cooking the hot dogs in an onion water (???), and then tossing them on a grill to finish them up. It doesn't work!!! They don't taste that bad, but you'll be tasting them for the rest of the night. Needless to say, after the first couple of times, we just avoid it.

Jersey Mike's Subs

I stopped here with a co-worker while on a detour trying to get away from Route 24 5 o'clock traffic. Typical cafeteria style sub place with fresh fixings for you to chose from. The place was very clean and there was a TV in the corner. The sandwich was good, but average. I had the Italian sub while my friend opted for a turkey sandwich. A successful stop, but nothing spectacular.

Panini Bella Grill

186 Thames St.
Newport, RI 02840
(401) 847-7784
<
687 West Main Road
Middletown, RI
(401) 324-6199
<
The Panini Grill that we visited was a tiny restaurant below street level on Thames Street in Newport, RI. They also have a Middletown location. On this day we left Thames Street and walked down a flight of stairs to enter the little sandwich shop which had a few tables, a large cooler of drinks, and a counter where you placed your order. That's it! Laura ordered the Muffaletta, which was an Italian meat, cheese, and veggie sandwich on herb focaccia. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Panini, which was chicken, cheese, and lettuce on a French baguette. Both sandwiches were substantial and delicious. We got to sit in the small window seat and look up the dresses of passers-by as they walked over us on Thames Street, ha, ha. But really, it was fun to sit in the window. If we're ever shopping on Thames Street again, I'd definitely stop by for a nice lunch.

Johnny Rockets

Fast, fun, and delish! We go to Johnny Rockets when we go to Providence Place Mall. It's always busy. It's worth the wait in line to get one of the best hamburgers I've ever tasted. I don't know what grade of beef they use, but their hamburger always tastes delicious. Their fries are great, the chocolate shake (that they're famous for) is outstanding, and I love the different syrups that they add to the colas. My favorite being the chocolate Coke. It's a bit more expensive than most hamburger places, but you can really tell the difference in the quality of the meat. I don't get here too often, but I always enjoy it when I do. I highly recommend it for a great burger.
P.S. - If you go to one of the main stores, they'll sing at you.

J's Delicatessen

285 Washington Hwy
Smithfield, RI 02917
(401) 231-0823
The Italiano. That's all I'm going to say. A delicious blend of Italian meats and cheeses topped with huge, juicy, roasted red peppers served on toasted Italian bread. The price was a little steep (I believe over $6), but the sandwich was HUGE! I visited this place while I was working a temporary job in the Smithfield, RI, industrial park. The place shared a lot with a gas station, and the inside restaurant was packed. There was no place to sit down while I waited for my sandwich to be made. They had a huge menu and when I went back to the office, some co-workers of mine were placing a pick-up order from J's. I am definitely going back to get another Italiano.

Cafe Luna

22 Midway Road
Cranston, RI 02920
(401) 944-1438

I am in love with their curry chicken salad sandwich. I'm thinking about it right now; it was so good. It had almonds, chicken salad, ground veggies, and lots of curry flavor. The place was very cute. My friend Tim and I went at night, and the place was dimly lit by tabletop candles. The waitresses were OK, a little on the slow side, but my delicious sandwich made up for it. Tim got the steak sandwich, but he wasn't crazy about it. However, never go by Tim. He's very picky about food. It could have been just him. The prices were a little high, but the sandwich was huge, and I can't wait to bring Mom!

Subway

I like Subway, after I figured out how to do it. When I first went in, I just stood there, and expected them to do everything for me. However, Laura told me that I had to give the instructions for them to assemble my sandwich. OH! OK! :) I picked the honey wheat bread, then picked out my meats, cheeses and whatever veggies I wanted, and finally, a sauce. I liked this. It was great! I'm pleased because you can get your sandwich exactly how you want it. All the food is fresh and the bread is delicious and hot. You can watch the people make your sub and can see the cleanliness of where the food is kept. Actually, I should go here more often so that I could lose weigh like Jared did.

Quizno's

Delicious, in my opinion. Mom has only eaten here twice, but I have gone multiple times due to the proximity of the Quizno's in Taunton to my former office. I absolutely love the Italian sub, and broccoli and cheese soup. I also love their chopped salads, especially the honey chicken and antipasto. Another favorite is the chicken carbonara, which puts chicken with bacon and mushrooms in an alfredo sauce. DELICIOUS. Mom loved her meatball sub, which you can get on various types of bread. I miss working near a Quizno's because they always seemed to have great coupons and deals. They are a little pricier that some sub shops, but the food is worth it. Everything is always hot and fresh. I can't wait to go back.

D'Angelo Sandwich Shop

Typical chain sub shop. We order from here occasionally, and I've always been satisfied. I love their turkey club wrap. It's quite large and really nice and fresh. I've also had their turkey pockets, and Laura loves the Italian sub (with hot peppers). Their salads are pretty good, and their broccoli and cheese soup (whenever they have it), is delicious. I'd definitely order from there again. The food is fresh and the prices are reasonable.

Roxy Delicatessen

If you ever go to Times Square, you have to visit Roxy's. It's a hoot! What attracted us was a window full of cheesecakes. Huge, delicious cheesecakes. We went inside (we've been a few times) and were promptly seated even though the place was very busy. On one particular visit we had been on a two-hour bus tour sitting on top of one of the buses in 40 degree weather, so we were freezing when we got inside Roxy's and ordered cappuccinos. Laura got a chicken salad sandwich and I got a burger. Both were HUGE and delicious. We also decided to share a slice of cheesecake since they give you quite a slab. All the cheesecakes here are outstanding. The bill was around $50 and most people will find Roxy's a little expensive since a hot dog is around $10 and Laura's chicken salad sandwich was around $15, but you do get a large quantity of bang for your buck. The place is very New York - loud, busy and a lot of fun. We'll go here every time we visit to New York.

Great! A semi-new edition to the downtown Fall River area, Cafe Arpeggio is housed in the old Cherry & Webb building, across from Dunkin Donuts. They serve lots of fresh sandwiches and salads, along with a large homemade ice cream menu. I've had both the sandwiches and the ice cream and I've never been let down. The prices are average for a trendy sandwich place, and if you go at night they feature live music and other special events. A fantastic find!
