On the Hunt for: Zeppoles

>
March 16, 2012
.
Since today was the day before St. Paddy's Day, we decided to get .... corned beef?  Irish soda bread?Hot cross buns?  No, we got zeppoles - those bastions of Irish, er, Italian delicacies.  Why Italian instead of Irish? Well, we're not Irish, nor are we Italian, but we wanted that sweet Italian pastry that only makes its appearance on St. Joseph's Day on March 19.
.
I saw an ad in The Herald News that Nonni's Italian Kitchen, a local Italian eatery in Tiverton, RI, was offering their homemade zeppoles on Friday, March 16. They said to order quickly because they often run out. I ran to the phone. I ordered six zeppoles for a total of $23.94. Ouch, that was a little steep. They'd better be 1) good, 2) a good size, and 3) filled. Not to worry, they were all that and more.
These donut-like pastries were very fresh and soft and absolutely filled with a cool custard cream. They had additional custard on top and a little cherry. They were pretty to look at and delicious to eat. They were so filled and such a nice size, I didn't feel cheated by the big price tag. Everyone loved them.
.
So next St. Patrick's Day, get your Italian on and order some zeppoles! You won't be sorry, and you won't see them again until next year. Happy St. Joseph's Day!
